Over the course of this semester I have gained much more knowledge about the Broadcast industry than I knew before. I have been able to work on an experience many different things over this semester. One thing I really enjoyed was filming sporting events. They were fun because you got to see angles that worked, angles that didn't, ways you should film certain sports, and also the idea of teamwork because while you were filming, someone had to be writing down times of when things happened, who scored, and what time they appeared on the video. Another thing I also enjoyed over the semester was being able to help with the sports show. My biggest dream is to be a sports broadcaster, so that is the area in which I found the most interest. I was able to learn how to run the teleprompter, as well as watch how to run the cameras, and audio. It was awesome to see it right there in front of you and be able to say you helped. I also have helped with Interlachen portraits, and been able to attend some Interlachen meetings to see how that aspect works as well. I also get to say that I helped with the new studio, because I got to help mud the set (and I did a pretty good job if I do say so myself). The thing I love about the Broadcast Industry is that it is really open for any ideas you have. If you come up with an idea for a show or paper you can just grab some people to help, pick it up, run with it and see where it goes. The Broadcast Industry is a very competitive industry it seems like, but at the same time it always seems as though there is an opportunity available for you to pick up. I have enjoyed working on many different things this semester and learning so much more about the broadcast industry. It really does have so many different things packed into one, from speaking skills, to copy writing, to video, to pictures, to editing. I feel as though this industry is the most complex because it involves so many different things. The men and women of this industry control what people watch by making it interesting, bringing people in, and sharing with them what they want to see and hear. A sports broadcaster on the sidelines of the NFL or MLB is what I most aspire to be and I feel as though I am already taking the steps needed to reach that goal. I am learning from my peers, my teachers, and by just getting experience in the different areas and aspects of this field. I have already learned so so much throughout my first semester here, and I can’t wait to learn much much more. I think the most important thing that I have learned this semester though is to not wait until the end to get your hours!!!

Midterm Report
Through the first half of news media practicum I have already learned more about the broadcast industry that i didn’t know before this class. I didn’t know that there were so many things around us that involve broadcasting and technology. One of the things that I learned most about, is how much the media is beginning to merge computer and television together. We have listened to many presentations during class that covered topics dealing with this merge. There are even people now that have their computer screens hooked up to their television, and just swap between the two screens when they need to. Another thing I have learned about is the controversy with women is sports broadcasting. There have been incidents where the women in this profession have been hit on, looked at in an unprofessional way by athletes, and much more. For example, Suzy Kohlberg, was reporting on the sidelines of a game when the former New York Jets football coach came up drunk and was saying inappropriate things to her and even tried to kiss her. People are saying that the locker rooms are not the place for these women to be. The truth is that the athletes need to be more professional and not act like a child and have inappropriate behavior when there is a women in the locker room. This is her job and she is doing what she needs to do to be successful in her career. Also through the first half of this class we have learned about the new Apple TV. This is a new device that you can carry with you at all times. It fits in the palm of your hand and is very portable and easy to take on the go. You can rent HD movies, watch TV shows, tune in to Netflix, Youtube, and much more. For only $99.00 it is very much worth your money for the use you will get out of it. An issue also facing the industry today, is whether there should be F.M. radio chips standard in all cell phones. It would be an additional charge, but you wouldn’t be able to choose to have it or not, it would be in all of them and would be required for you to have them. The two sides of this issue are that some say yes this would be a good idea to be able to get weather updates on the go, but others say they don’t even listen to the radio in the first place so there is no use for it. People now a days can look up the weather on their phones, or have apps or internet on their phones that can do the same thing, therefore this chip would be a waste and a cost for something that we already have the access to. I am looking forward to learning much more about the broadcast industry in the second half of the class, and plan to participate with sports filming, editing, and possibly anchoring if I get the chance.
