FINAL BLOG

My dream since I was a little girl has been to follow in the footsteps of Erin Andrews. I would love nothing more than to be on the sidelines of the College football, NFL, and MLB games reporting for ESPN. As we all know things don’t get handed to you these days, you have to work your way up and that is what Erin did. Erin was born in Maine, but moved to Tampa as a little girl when her father Steven Andrews, a TV journalist and six-time Emmy Award winner, began working as an investigative reporter for WFLA-TV.  Erin attended Bloomingdale High School where she was a cheerleader as well as a member of student government and the National Honor Society. She then attended the University of Florida where she was a member of the Zeta Tau Alpha sorority and a member of the Florida Gators Dazzlers dance team. She graduated from the University of Florida in 2000 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Telecommuncations. After graduation, Erin joined Fox Sports Florida as a freelance reporter. From 2001-2002 she worked with the Tampa Bay Lightning reporter for the Sunshine Network. From 2002-2004 she covered the Atlanta Braves, Atlanta Thrashers, and the Atlanta Hawks for the Turner South network as a studio host and reporter. In May of 2004 she began working for ESPN as a reporter for ESPN’s National Hockey Night. She also reported for the College World Series, Little League World Series, and the Great Outdoor Games. Once she got her foot in the door she also served as a sideline reporter for ESPN College Football Saturday Primetime and Big Ten college basketball games. In 2005 her job expanded even more to include sideline reporting for ESPN College Football Thursday Primetime and Major League Baseball. From 2008-2010 she also reported for ESPN’s and ABC’s live coverage of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Outside of reporting she has been a guest on several talk shows to include The Oprah Winfrey Show, Jimmy Kimmel Live, and The Tonight Show With Jay Leno. In 2010, she was a contestant in ABC’s Dancing With The Stars where she placed third out of 11 contestants. It was announced on January 13th of this year that she signed a deal with Reebok to be a promoter for its ZigTech Brand. Unfortunately, a conflict arose when she was reporting on the sidelines of the 2011 Rose Bowl two weeks later and noted that the Texas Christian Players were slipping do to their Nike shoes. Due to the conflict of interest, ESPN announced that they are requiring Andrews to end her endorsement with Reebok by the end of this year. Andrews is currently the host of the first hour of ESPN’s College Gameday on ESPNU and has been a Good Morning America correspondent on ABC since 2010. Erin also does charitable work on the side for numerous organizations, one in which she co-hosted the Music Builds: CMT Disaster Relief Concert to raise money for the American Red Cross after the April 27th tornadoes in the southern United States. Erin is such an inspiration for me and to be in her shoes one day would be the greatest gift of a lifetime. I just have to keep pushing forward and working hard and I know one day I can make it there.

Final Paper

Freshman year is officially over and I have learned quite a bit about broadcast that I hadn't known before. This semester my hours came mostly from filming baseball games and working on the sports show. Although I didn't work with many other areas in broadcast I learned a lot about the sports area of it that will help me in my future career. In baseball I learned the correct way to shoot highlights and also how to shoot for a package. The difference in the the two is that when filming for a package you have to get a variety oh shots so the package is eye catching and interesting. Luti explained to us the importance in collecting shots from all different angles and how that would make your package that better. We also learned the importance of taking notes and jotting down times when important things happened, that way when you are putting your package together you don't have to go through all of the video, you can go straight to the time where you captured the highlight. Another thing I did a lot this semester was work on the Southern Sports Network. This is my main focus when it comes to broadcast because my main goal is to be a sports broadcaster, so the experience working with the show is really beneficial to me. Most of the time I ran the prompter, but I also ran the camera some and learned the correct way to frame the talent on camera whether it was a one shot or a two shot. Just from watching Luti you can pick up on what angles look good and how to position yourself on camera. You learn things that sound good and things that you should avoid when talking about sports. In the interview process I noticed that the fact that Luti actually knows the different sports makes it that much more interesting and that much more entertaining to watch. You can tell that he is actually interested in the questions he is asking and not just reading off a script and then waiting for the reply. I also helped edit the shows from time to time. I worked with final cut over the summer, but just getting the chance to work with it again makes it that much more familiar to use and the experience I am gaining from it will help me with future projects in my broadcast career. One thing that I really enjoyed this semester and wish I could have  done more of was actually go shoot a film and be a part of the action. I worked with Dalton towards the end of the semester on his "Zombie Planet" trailer and it was a lot of fun. I  got to work the camera, do the make-up for the talent, and also be on camera some. That was an experience that I really enjoyed and something that I am going to try to do more of next year. I also would like to try to put my own package together next year and just see what I can do with it. I always feel the best way to get better at something is to keep doing it, and that is why I just want to work with final cut, filming, and being on camera as much as I can as a way to get myself out there and improve in my major.

Editing Sports Show- 2 Hours

I worked with Luti editing the last two sports shows of the year! We captured the video, cut it, placed audio with it, and got it just about finished! I LOVE LUTI :)

Filming- 4 1/2 Hours

From 3-730 I was filming with Dalton for his project. First we did a dance scene in the studio with the green screen that he is using as a service announcement. The second thing we did was really fun. We went to Dalton's to film the trailer for his movie "Zombie Planet." Sami, Amanda, and I did everyones make-up for the film to make them look like zombies. We all did almost everything from filming to acting. It was fun to work on it with a bunch of different people and experience the working together that has to happen in order for even a short movie trailer to be filmed. It was so much fun and I look forward to working on many more.

Sports Show-1 1/2 Hours

Interviewed Athletic Director/Baseball Coach Pete Meyer! He gave us insight into the future of the athletic department and the new facilities we are looking at. I laughed at John because the prompter wasn't working and his ad lib was kinda bad :( but it was still good :)...that made no sense:/ The show was fun and we got a lot accomplished :)

Chubb also had a home-run on Friday night in the first game of the series against Eckerd. We learned how to shoot highlights as well as how to film certain ways to make a package.

Sports Show-2 Hours

I was in the studio from 3 to 5 on Wednesday March 16th. I went early to help Luti prepare for the show writing the script and coming up with questions for the interviews with Rion Rayfield and Mary O'Sullivan. Then we taped the show, we did interviews first then the actual highlights from the week. I ran the prompter most of the time and the camera for like 2 seconds. Next week I am going to run the camera the whole time so I can get more experience with that :) GO MOCS!

Midterm Exam-SORRY IT'S LATE:(

Over the first semester of  Practicum 2 I have learned more and experienced more than I already knew. My favorite part about practicum is working on the Southern Sports Network. It is interesting to see all of the different sides of what it takes to put a show together. Whether you are running sound, the camera, or the prompter everyone has to work together in order to create a smooth and entertaining show. Also this semester I have attended many baseball games. I have realized that it is very difficult to film a baseball game with only one camera. It is hard to find an angle where you can see everything from homeplate to the pitcher, and all the way to the outfield fence. My article presentation in class was about how a news anchor posed for a swimsuit calendar. The press made it seem like a big thing when really if you read the story it tells you how it was for breast cancer awareness and that she was a survivor. It was interesting to see what my classmates thought about the issue. They agreed that it wasn’t a big deal and that it was for a good cause, they say if it had been a two piece swimsuit, that is where the problem would have arised. Some things I was shocked by from other presentations was about the woman who fumbled for her words on air. She was speaking and began to just go into a state of being where she couldn’t form words or speak clearly. It ended up that doctors say she may have had a mild stroke. It is a very scary situation that can have a very negative effect on camera. Some things that I have learned this semester have helped me to be more confident in working with Final Cut Pro. I sat down with Luti and edited some basketball film from last year when they recognized  past Florida Southern Moccasins for making it to be an All American. I learned how to cross fade, change the wire frame, and cut in center ways to make the video flow and not look choppy. Over this semester it has made me figure out more and more why I want to be a sports broadcaster. My dream to one day be on ESPN is seeming to get closer and closer everyday. I enjoy being able to help out with the sports show and watch Luti anchor, as I try to pick up some techniques that work and some that don’t work. The fact that I am on a campus where I can experience the different sports and learn the different ways to shoot basketball compared to baseball, and swimming compared to lacrosse really brodens my knnowledge of the production industry and helps me to know more than just one area. I can’t wait to continue to learn more and more each semester and know that one day all of this hard work will pay off.

Sports Show-1 Hour

Filmed the sports show on Tuesday! With cute little kids running around lol I ran the prompter, and Luti interviewed a men's lacrosse player! It was a fun show because all the boy scouts were adorable :)

Filmed Baseball Game-3 Hours

Filmed the game with Jordan and Shelby against Flagler on Tuesday. Up until the 3rd inning we were tied 3-3...unfortunately Flagler scored 2 unearned runs in the 4th inning to up the score to 5-3. This was the 2nd loss for the Mocs, both to Flagler. This game dropped the Mocs to 3rd in the Sunshine State Conference.

Filmed the women's basketball game with Luti, Justin, and Jenna against Rollins on Saturday Feb. 19th. We started off slow but by the end of the first half we had taken the lead. It was also the first 20 win season for Coach Olson, and the 600th win in Moccasin history. We ended up overtaking Rollins 87-63!

Filmed Baseball Game- 3 Hours

BRADFORD PLEASE COUNT THIS!!!! I was out of town Sunday through Tuesday and I forgot to log these by Friday:(

I filmed the first baseball game on Friday 11th! I was with Luti, Justin, and Tony! We filmed mostly from the metal bleachers by our dugout at the top! It was a nice place to get the entire field and be able to see everyone! Highlights were the 3 run homer by Tony Mitchell 24 in the 8th, and Tyler Benzel 42 home-run over left field! We played Barton and won 5-2!

Sports Show Interview-1 Hour

We shot the interview portion of the SSN with Brandon Jenkins from the men's basketball team. I ran the prompter!

Filming Baseball Game-1 Hour

I filmed some of the Mocs vs. Saint Leo baseball game Tuesday the 8th from 7-8 with Jordan Tickell. We got some shots behind homeplate and took some from down by the bull pen beside our dugout. We also found a new place to shoot from at the bottom of the bleachers a little left of  homeplate. It is a good view to get the pitcher and batter at the same time, as well as be able to see slides into home and outs at first base. We ended up winning the game 13-3!

Editing- 2 1/2 Hours

I worked with Luti on February 3rd from 5-7:30 in the studio. We edited the last years presentation of all american basketball players from Florida Southern! I edited a lot of it by myself (with Luti supervising of course). I used mainly cross dissolves, but also used a few fade in and outs, as well as adjusted some video with wireframe!

Editing- 2 1/2 Hours

Worked with Luti and Jenna in the sports studio on February 1st from 4-6:30! We were finishing edit and tweaking episode 4 of the Southern Sports Network! John showed us how to work with character generators, scrolling credits, trim excess film, and much more. The show consisted of Jordan's basketball package from the Mocs vs. South Carolina-Aiken game, as well as an interview with women's basketball guard Taylor Maldonado. He showed us how to compress the videos, and we experienced the process of waiting for videos to be converted to m4v format, so we could upload them to Facebook as well Blip TV! I learned a lot about final cut that I hadn't recently known that will help me in the future! THANKS LUTI :)

Second Semester Hours- 30 minutes

I worked with Jordan Tickell (Luti was there for a little bit) on Monday January 31st from 3-3:30 in the sports studio! We were finishing editing her basketball package from the Mocs vs. South Carolina-Aiken game! She showed me how to use wireframe and how to adjust the different levels of volume to make them the same level across the entire video.
